How to Install cPanel/WHM on your VPS

It’s very easy to install cPanel on a VPS with SSH. You can accomplish it with a few steps:

  1. Log in to your Linux VPS via SSH as the root user (or gain root permissions from another user).
  2. Copy the following into the server’s command line:

    yum install -y perl;cd /home;wget -N http://httpupdate.cpanel.net/latest;sh latest;/usr/local/cpanel/cpkeyclt

The last part of the command will automatically check for and verify the server’s cPanel license. If you do not have a license, you can still install WHM/cPanel, but the licensing command will fail and cPanel will continue in trial mode until verified. (Should you need help getting a license, just ask us!)

This article applies to:

  • CentOS 5
  • CentOS 6
  • CentOS 7
  • and equivalent RHEL or Scientific Linux distributions.

What are IOPS?

“IOPS (Input/Output Operations Per Second, pronounced eye-ops) is a common performance measurement used to benchmark computer storage devices like hard disk drives (HDD), solid state drives (SSD), and storage area networks (SAN).”

Input/output, or I/O, refers to active computer activity that usually involves the CPU, memory, and file storage. However, in the context of benchmarking storage devices such as HDDs and solid-state drives (SSDs), we simply refer to I/O as the max rate we can write to the storage device, and read from the storage device.

The total capacity for I/O Operations Per Second is given as a number in IOPS. For example, a single hard disk might be capable of 86 or 120 IOPS, while a SSD storage volume will have much higher input/output capacity.

How soon are new VPS instances setup?

In most cases, all new VPS orders are deployed within 1 minute, and become available within 2 to 3 minutes.

If your service is not deployed immediately, please feel free to contact us!

Is a VPS management panel provided?

  • Start, stop, reboot VM.
  • Reinstall VM.
  • Access serial console / rescue KVM.
  • View access and reinstall logs.
  • Memory and bandwidth usage statistics.
  • View historical usage statistics.

What is RAM (Memory)? What is it used for?

RAM, or Random Access Memory, is a core component of computer systems that is used to store currently-running applications and other data not yet committed to the disk.

It is fair to say that the amount of system RAM directly affects system performance. With more RAM, a VPS has more ability to perform without restrictions and slowdowns. With less RAM, a VPS may encounter a shortage and will be forced to perform more slowly as a result.

The amount of RAM required for a VPS is different for each application, but you can use the following guide to get an idea:

128 MB RAM: Very small, ideal for a single daemon or script.
512 MB RAM: The minimum required by Windows Server, and the absolute minimum suggested for many server applications like cPanel.
1 GB RAM: Enough for many applications, and a good amount to run Windows Server or any Linux distribution with good performance.
2 GB RAM: Used for busy applications, large applications and servers that hold many connections or users simultaneously.

What is SSD storage and RAID10?

Although the details of solid-state storage and RAID technology are much more in-depth, this article provides a good summary of the definitions and reasons why they are important to SolVPS. We encourage you to learn more about each of them!

SSD (Solid-State Drive) Storage: File storage based on SSDs, rather than HDD (Hard Disk Drives). Solid-state storage is a newer technology that supersedes disk-based storage in performance, delivering read/write speeds often many times greater than disk-based storage speeds.

RAID refers to a technology used to combine multiple SSDs or HDDs in a synchronized array. The result is fault tolerance, and even greater performance capacity, as several SSD units are committed to sharing the same input/output operations.

SolVPS employs RAID10 technology in all of its storage arrays. RAID10, or RAID1+0, arrays SSDs by dividing 16 drives into 2 groups, with each group of 8 being a mirror of the other. The resulting arrayed storage I/O allows for the best possible storage speed and redundancy.

What is the VPS network speed and how much bandwidth/data transfer is included?

All servers include a 1Gbit (1000Mbps) network uplink. Each VPS package includes a set amount of monthly data transfer (bandwidth), starting at 500 GB and going as high as 10TB or unlimited. If you would like to add additional data transfer to your service, please contact us.
